Accokeek Fire House to Smallwood

Sat, December 15, 2012 10:43 PM | Anonymous

On another cloudy, chilly Saturday morning we set off from Accokeek Firehouse, eventually, for General Smallwood State Park. The CC group included Calvin Conyers, Walt Chalmers, Dan Donahue and Larry Perkins with me and Reggie Stokes leading (shepherding might be a more appropriate term). Before we arrived at the park, the sun finally emerged and we were able to enjoy the warmth at our rest stop at the marina at Sweden Point. Before we left the park, we rode over to General Smallwood’s Retreat where we encountered the steepest hills of our ride.

As we gathered before heading out, we admired the reindeer antlers decorating Dan’s helmet in celebration of the season. Someone noted that it was still hunting season .

We were joined by a rider from the B group (whoever) on the return trip by way of Indian Head Highway. There was one flat which was repaired and all returned to the fire house safely–as far as we know. I’d tell you how far we went but I’m not sure there was a functioning computer in my group. Another successful outing.

Helmet antlers contributed to a very close encounter w/ a young doe on the IHRT. The doe was standing two feet from the trail and kept staring at me as I approached. I slowed as I got w/in a few yards of her, knowing that at this close range she could easly bolt across my path and cause a collision. Our eyes were locked as I rolled parallel to her position. The doe then turned and trotted along side me for 10 or 12 yards. After speeding up she crossed my path and disappeared into the woods to my left. Was she flirting w/ me? Linda or Nancy Ruth any professional vet comments?
As to hunting season, while wearing my helmet antlers, I always sprint and zigzag past the gun club and the other areas of the IHRT where hunters may be nearby. Of course, I check to ensure that the trail is safe for these extreme cycling maneuvers.

Question regarding the "mechanical issue", so was that corrected by a phillips or a flat head, screw driver??...LOL

Thanks Reggie & Belinda for a great ride and adding the tour in the Park. Very nice. A first for me. I thought Reggie would fall off his bike laughing so hard at Dan's helmet antlers. Hope Jim got a good picture. We had a blast. The other 2 riders were Michelle and her guest.
