Welcome to the Oxon Hill Bicycle and Trail Club

“Join the Ride”

Who We Are – Mission Statement

The Oxon Hill Bicycle and Trail Club, founded in 1972, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing the enjoyment and development of recreational cycling. We ride primarily in Southern Maryland where we enjoy the beauty of the rural landscape and the charm of waterfront communities. We design our rides to promote safety, exercise, and camaraderie.

Our members cycle in events of different “classes”, that is, with a range of mileage options and accommodating groups riding at different paces. Local events range from short rides along Southern Maryland’s rail trails to longer rides in a variety of terrain. Multi-day events outside of Southern Maryland may cover more extensive distances (in many days! With rest days in-between!), as we explore regional rail trails and attractions.

Our Rides

We organize rides throughout the year during the week and on weekends. Yes, we ride all year long, even during winter if conditions permit. We ride on both trails and roads. We encourage our members to lead rides and also suggest new areas to ride in.

We hold frequent multi-class rides and special events such as the annual July ride that ends in a watermelon feast, continuing a tradition started years ago. We also hold an annual picnic ride in late summer that affords club members the opportunity to socialize after completing one of the rides organized for this event.

Our multi-day rides include a round-trip ride from Richmond to Williamsburg over a long weekend and a weekend ride along a rail trail linking Cockeysville, Maryland and York, Pennsylvania. These have now become annual events. We have also organized multi-day rides along the Empire State Trail in New York state and the Ohio to Erie Trail in Ohio.

Our signature ride is the Patuxent River Rural Legacy held in June. This event includes multiple rides of different lengths and speeds featuring beautiful rural areas in Southern Maryland with water views and supported rest stops. Proceeds from this event help to support the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary, a state park in the Brandywine area of Upper Marlboro, Maryland and the small town of Eagle Harbor.

Other Social Events

In addition to the watermelon and picnic rides, we hold an annual dinner for club members in connection with our annual meeting. We also hold an annual dinner to celebrate those who have volunteered for the club during the year by leading rides, working at our Rural Legacy rest stops, or providing other types of support.

Member Benefits

All club members have access to our website, and receive a newsletter with details on club activities, bicycle advocacy, and other articles of interest including features on bicycle tours members have taken. Members also have access to a smartphone app, Wild Apricot, which is our go-to place for ride postings and a member directory. The app also provides an easy way to register for rides and contains an e-membership card that can be used to obtain discounts with some local bike shops. Club benefits also include free access* to the extensive RideWithGPS rourte website, in addition to the club’s own route library which contains over 1,000 local routes. Members also can download a mobile RWGPS app for use navigating routes, along with voice navigation while doing a club ride. (*Free access to RideWithGP is through the club after setting up one’s own free RWGPS account.)
