OHBike Southern Maryland History Tour

Memorial Day Weekend, May 25-27

Join Tour Leader Steve Palincsar and other Oxon Hill Bicycle Club members this Memorial Day weekend for a 3-day bicycling tour in Southern Maryland.  Leaving Brandywine Friday morning, May 25, we'll ride to Hollywood, MD by way of the Thompson Corner Amish area.  We'll stop and tour historic Sotterley Plantation en route to our destination, the Francis Knott Retreat Lodge in Greenwell State Park.  On Saturday, we'll ride to St. Mary's City and tour the historic area and the Maryland Dove, overnighting again at Knott Lodge. We'll return home on Sunday, visiting the Loveville Amish area en route.

Lodging: We'll be staying two nights at the Francis Knott Retreat Lodge in Greenwell State Park.  The facility features sleeping quarters for up to 17 people, five bathrooms, a fireplace and a full-service kitchen. It also has a sunroom with dining tables for up to 25 people.  Bed linens are included in the rental.  According to the Greenwell Foundation, the lodge is a “great place to relax and feel at home, perfect for vacations and retreats.”  See photos of the Lodge at  http://tinyurl.com/7mjowke.

About the riding: Distances will be about 60 miles each day over gently rolling terrain (1100 – 1500 feet of climbing per day).  Although there will be an unavoidable few miles on the shoulder of busy roads, for the most part the routes will be on quiet back roads very much like most OHBike rides. We expect to have a vehicle along to transport the gear.

Tentative routes:

Short Ride Option: If you would like to do short rides in St Mary’s County on this tour, drive to Knott Lodge and then bike over to Slotterys Plantation on Friday to meet the group biking down. On Saturday, drive part of the way to St. Mary’s City, bike to the historic site and then join the. group who are biking down. On Sunday, do a short bike ride and return by car.

Sites to visit:

  • Sotterley Plantation - Older than Mount Vernon, older than Monticello, older than the nation itself, Sotterley Plantation stands majestically on the banks of the Patuxent River. It is the only remaining Tidewater Plantation in Maryland that is open to the public, with a full range of visitor activities and educational programs.  There is a manor house overlooking the Patuxent River, a sawn-log slave quarters of circa 1830, an 18th-century brick warehouse, and an early-19th-century brick meat house. Farm buildings include an early-19th-century corn crib and an array of barns and work buildings from the early 20th century.
  • Historic St Mary's City -The site of the fourth permanent settlement in British North America and Maryland's first capital is a mix of colorful living history and archaeology set in a beautiful tidewater landscape.  There's a tobacco plantation, an Indian hamlet, and on the waterfront, the Maryland Dove: a re-creation of a trade vessel from the late 17th century.  We'll climb onboard and chat with the ship's crew.

Cost: The cost of lodging for two nights is $100 per person. Meals are extra. Options include having meals catered, stopping at restaurants, cooking singly or as a group, or a combination. Additional costs include entrance fees: Sotterley Plantation charges $10 for adults ($8 for seniors), St Mary’s City charges $10 for adults ($9 seniors over 60).

Registration: Registration is limited to 17. When you register, you can pay the $100 lodging fee with your credit card or mail a check to OHBTC, P.O. Box 81, Oxon Hill, MD 20750-0081. Payment due by May 15.
