OHBike Southern Maryland History Tour
Monday, May 19 to Wednesday, May 21
Join Tour Leader Steve Palincsar and other Oxon Hill Bicycle Club members for a 3-day bicycling tour in Southern Maryland. Leaving Brandywine Monday morning, May 19, we'll ride to the Francis Knott Retreat Lodge in Greenwell State Park. On Tuesday, we'll ride to visit historical sites and return to Knott Lodge for the night. We'll bike home on Wednesday, visiting the Loveville Amish area en route.
Lodging: We'll be staying two nights at the Francis Knott Retreat Lodge in Greenwell State Park. The facility features sleeping quarters for up to 24 people, five bathrooms, a fireplace and a full-service kitchen. It also has a sunroom with dining tables for up to 25 people. Bed linens are included in the rental. According to the Greenwell Foundation, the lodge is a “great place to relax and feel at home, perfect for vacations and retreats.” See photos of the Lodge at http://tinyurl.com/7mjowke.
About the riding: Distances will be about 60 miles each day over gently rolling terrain (1100 – 1500 feet of climbing per day). Although there will be an unavoidable few miles on the shoulder of busy roads, for the most part the routes will be on quiet back roads very much like most OHBike rides. We expect to have a vehicle along to transport the gear.
Tentative routes:
Short Ride Option: If you would like to do short rides in St Mary’s County on this tour, drive to Knott Lodge and then bike over to Slotterys Plantation on Mondayto meet the group biking down. On Tuesday, drive part of the way to St. Mary’s City, bike to the historic site and then join the. group who are biking down. On Wednesday, do a short bike ride and return by car.
