Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/17686251, La Plata Loops, heading south through Port Tobacco via a rest stop at La Plata, then looping back by way of Hawthorne, Marshall Corner, Pomfret

Weather: upper 50s to low 60s, a steady northerly breeze around 10 mph; increasing amounts of sun as the ride continued

AMS: probably around 18 in the front, 14 at the back

Report:  A decent number turned out for an unusual Wednesday AM listing, postponed from the day before. We thought it felt chillier than expected at the start, but when the sun came out it definitely felt like spring. The usual suspects went off the front; with others strung out along the way, the ride leader decided it was a good opportunity to enjoy a pleasant Casual Conversation pace with the CC leader and to get a tutorial in Making and Improving Cue Sheets 101, as well as various other useful and interesting topics. Thanks to Steve P for sharing your knowledge, and thanks to all who came out to ride this morning.

An easy one to report on today: no CC riders came today.  I rode alone for a bit, and then Barbara waited up and we rode together.  Towards the end, Sam joined our little laggard group.  In all, a surprisingly nice day.

  • Sun, March 26, 2017 2:00 PM | Diane Harris (Administrator)

The weather was not as nice as yesterday, with overcast skies and cooler temperatures.  Nevertheless, I was joined by Ron and Barbara Haney, Tavistock Procter, Ken Meredith, Dan Zavorka, Janell Saunders, Kishia Clemencia, Theresa Rowell, John Hartsfield, and Tom Roberts.  As usual, the group split up between the faster riders who were advised to be careful and follow the cue sheet and those that kept to the lower end of the B pace.  The break away point is always the climb up Berry Rd (228).  We met the faster ones at the rest stop in LaPlata, they were once again off while the rest of us took our time refueling.  We continued on, with Janell leaving us before getting back to the start (she rode from home to the start location), uneventfully, finishing well within the advertised pace.  Thanks to all who came out.

Weather: And it's back to winter again!  A gray, overcast day with light ground haze, 49 degrees when we started and 49 degrees when we finished, but due to the wind and the damp it felt like the low to mid 40s.  It was a good thing we both brought full winter garments as well as the lighter outfits the predicted 50 degree temperatures suggested, because they were needed.

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/15055422   42 miles, 1450' of elevation gain.  This route seeks out most of the inclines in the "Amish" area.  We took Penns Hill and Kentucky as downhills and Old Sycamore and Newport Church as uphills, while Dubois (times two) and Trinity Church are half the one, half the other.  With the arrival of Spring, Gilbert Run Park is open on weekends so the route took advantage of that for a rest stop.

    Mishaps & mechanicals: none

    AMS: 12.5

Other than spotting Darin King out riding (twice) there was very little stirring in the area today.  Few cars, even fewer joggers and pedestrians.  We saw a couple of white tail deer bounding along through the woods, but they wisely stayed in the woods and didn't venture forth on Budd's Creek Road.   As unpromising as the day looked, it still turned out to be a fine day for riding.

Weather:  Come on......you all know "AMAZING!!!!!"

    The Ride:

With this being only the second AA ride of the new year, 1st being the windy CJE last week, the route incorporated rest stops strategically placed to allow for regrouping after the demanding segments of the route.  We acknowledged the fact that there were gonna be varying levels of fitness amongst the group and "kinda" adopted a Gentleman's Agreement in regards to the pain to be inflicted upon one another...LOL!!!!!

Pace was awesome for the route,  some Segment KOM's, several PR's, and a lot of self- evaluated fitness levels were gained during the ride.

I really appreciated the attendance of riders,  and glad to report an awesome time had by all and no mishaps, or mechanicals (other than a dead derailleur battery)

Weather: Awesome! I hope everyone was able to get out and ride on this perfect day.

4 people enjoyed the IHRT. We met at the Livingston Road parking lot. On the way towards White Plains we went at different speeds. I went the farthest and turned around and as I met riders on the way back we all road back together to enjoy the scenery, trial, wildlife, etc. One person didn't have enough air in their tires. I got out my hand pump and they were full of hot air in not time. I wasn't a Boy Scout but I always try to "Be Prepared".

The weather did turn out as predicted, in fact better than predicted.  It was warm and bright.  We all left together, short and long people.  There were 8 in our group.  Chris made a wrong turn but rejoined us at the Starbucks rest stop.  The majority of our group rode ahead.  There were no mechanical issues, but the cue sheet instructions were confusing at the intersection of Indian head and Marshall Hall.  Unfortunately, two would be riders were made aware of the necessity of pedals.

Well, great weather, great area to ride in and great company to ride with, came all together and made for a great ride!

I was joined by members John Kadyszewski, Cathy Wilson, Richard Edelman and Nancy Avitabile. We started from the Pisgah Firehouse and rode down to Nanjemoy, over to Riverside then back up to Ironsides and Pisgah. Riding down Riverside Rd over to Smith Point Rd and Holly Springs Rd was a treat. The rollers work out the climbs, the scenery is pretty and the notable absence of cars make the experience very enjoyable. Worth every minute of the one hr driving time it took Cathy, John and myself to reach Pisgah. At around mile 20 we crossed paths with Steve's CC troop coming up the opposite way; looked at my watch and it showed 12:20 so yesterday's estimate was in the ballpark as our group chose not to stop at the first rest stop at mile 13.

The group stayed very close together for the entire ride and rode as one troop, often separated from one another by no more than two wheels worth. My Garmin at the end of the ride showed an AMS of 16.9 mph. We'll blame the great weather and great company for that overage but if you dont tell anyone I wont either....

The Nanjemoy area has never failed to satisfy so we will repeat this ride again in the future.

Members: Harry Kidd & Walt Roscello - both on recumbents

Guests: I sent an invitation to the Babes & Babe Magnets on Bikes, and they showed up in force, with Jenn, Robin, Lynn, Lenn, Saul and Russ joining us for the ride.

Weather: Suddenly it's summer - or was it back to February? - but don't worry, tomorrow will be more "seasonable," whatever that means.  Sunny, breezy-to-windy, 65 at the start but feeling cooler due to the wind, rising to 79 or 80 degrees by early afternoon.  Are we confused yet?

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/11259181  44 miles, 1428' of elevation gain.  A route that went in the opposite direction from Pano's 11 am B ride, leading us to pass each other going in opposite directions on Maryland Point Road about 20 miles into the ride.

Mishaps & mechanicals: Harry had some work done on his electric recumbent, including a new chain, new cassette and new battery, which came unplugged somewhere before the base of the climb up Durham Church Road.  A minor inconvenience at worst, especially compared to the increase in range from 10-20 miles on the old, tired and sad battery to more than 100 miles per charge with the new one.  No more range anxiety for "The Electric Kidd."   One other mishap, in this case trivial: I collided with some kind of flying insect, and it stung me on the arm.   Had it happened to the wrong person it could have been a big deal indeed.

AMS: 13.1 at the back, probably over 14 in the Babes on Bikes group.

    Report
: Thank you gentlemen for a beautiful ride.  The savage winds and temps on our return up the unsheltered 301 corridor made for a tough, but oddly fitting opener especially considering the camaraderie and teamwork always demonstrated on these rides under these conditions.  I'm confident a wonderful season is to follow.
