Members: Ron Haney, Larry Peed, Tom Roberts, Randy and Jackie Schoch

    Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/13330039 (planned route)

Weather: Chilly to start, mid 50s, warmed up to mid 60s, sunny

    AMS: 16.2

Report: With a small group today, we had the freedom to improvise. Randy and Jackie signed in with us, but left first, and did their own ride. We remaining four stuck to the plan for the first half, heading down to Port Tobacco, up Locust Grove/Old Stagecoach to cross 301 and scale the Beast of Bel Alton, to the rest stop at St. Ignatius Church, where we learned a bit of local history from Larry and greeted the Cardboard Pope. After that we went off-script, deciding by consensus to bypass Locust Grove x2 and La Plata, and to return via Valley Rd and Hawthorne, just because we like them, and then up Livingston. We ended up with pretty much the same mileage and elevation gain as the original plan, and had a very nice ride.

Good turnout for the B version, but nobody came for the CC.

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/5201396  You could think of it as a mini-Rural Legacy route, only starting at North Keys Community Park.  We modified the route slightly today, taking the second rest stop at the Patuxent River Park Pavilion rather than at the Jug Bay Visitors Center (and what a good thing it was, too - see "Mishaps & Mechanicals") and skipping Duvall and Mt Carmel due to concerns about possible tree debris on the road.  End result: 44.0 miles

Weather: 50s and heavily overcast at the start and windy.  By 11:30 blue skies were breaking through and the solid gray had given way to ragged bands of white, silver, gray and deep blue clouds.  An hour later we saw cloudless blue skies and bright sun.  The wind continued unabated.   But as we've learned from experience, on the tree-lined "Legacy" roads even fairly strong winds as we had today turn into frothy disturbed air with little serious directional push.  Speed isn't possible (or desirable, considering how much debris had come down from the trees, particularly on Fenno near the Merkle Sanctuary) but there's no danger of being pushed off the road or into traffic.

Mishaps & mechanicals: Getting ready to leave the Patuxent River Park Pavilion I was unable to clip in.  I checked my shoe and no cleat.  I remembered that clipping out had felt odd - too much travel - so I backtracked my steps and eventually found the cleat, the attachment plate and one of the screws on the concrete walkway under the roofed area.  Joan had a spare cleat attachment screw among her tools and spares, so replacing the cleat only took a minute.  Had we taken our break at Jug Bay as originally planned, chances of finding the missing cleat and attachment hardware on the grass or the dirt would have been miniscule; the only alternatives would have been to wait for a ride at the park or tape my shoe to the pedal with duct tape.

We held our Sunday Mourning Mountain Bike Ride at Cedarville state park starting at 9:30am. We followed the course counter clock wise until we arrived at the lake. At the lake we picked up the trail and followed the trail clockwise. After the lake we were able to take a short break. After the break we picked up the main trail and arrived back at the parking lot at 1200. Riders included Barry and Jason.

A large group of regulars came to ride this morning (rain is threatened for tomorrow). There were many trail users including bikers, walkers, joggers, and many dogs taking their humans for a walk. We didn't see a lot wildlife out and about today (a few deer, wild turkeys, and squirrels). Member Bob Moye was riding the trail again today. It was a good day to be on a bike ride. Most of the group rode ahead at a faster pace. Jackie and I rode sweep until the "Jim and Jane" bench at which point I took a break and turned around (I have been suffering from Gout of the big toe). Jackie then road ahead at a fast pace in order to catch up with the rest of the riders. At the White Plains rest stop, Jackie and the rest of the riders met up with Bev and Judy. Jackie led with a furious (20+) pace on the return to Indian Head and then lunch at George's.

Weather: Cloudy, breezy, cool and a touch of mist at the start.  Low 60s at the start, rising to 69 degrees by early afternoon.

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14346057  37 miles, 2047' of elevation gain.

The ride split up pretty quickly with the Big Dogs and the Pooches tailing behind.  Bob Thompson rode with the Big Dogs, but came back to keep the Pooches company.  I don't think the Big Dogs would tolerate Bob eating pizza at the rest  stop.
Javier is new to group riding, but did great.  He rode with the Pooches to the first rest stop, hung back with Steve's group, and finished with the Pooches.  We look forward to having Javier on more rides!

Mishaps & mechanicals: With uncertain weather at the start, the ride leader stuck a wind breaker in his jersey pocket to ward off any precipitation.  You know the story, shortly after the start, unbeknownst to me it liberated itself.  Luckily Joan and Ron following us found and recovered the jacket and hauled it to the finish.  Thank you both!
Moral: volunteer to lead rides and you get good karma (at least for that day)

AMS: 16.5 for the Big Dogs, 14.8 for the Pooches on the Porch

Report: A good time.  I enjoyed riding much of the first half with Michie (Charles Sidwell).  I stopped to take a phone call at the bottom of 301 (I was concerned the call might be a mishap or mechanical, but it turned out to be a wrong number), which put me by myself for the return.  Hard to believe the CJE season is nearly over; just one ride left.  Hope to see you all next week –weather permitting!

Route: This 16-mile tour starts at the Accokeek Fire Station and weaves through Accokeek to Marshall Hall Road. From there it's down the hill to the Potomac River for a break. The return goes up Barrys Hill and then follows Accokeek Road back to the fire station.

Weather: Pleasantly cool - temperatures in the high 60's - with partly cloudy skies. A beautiful, early fall afternoon.

    AMS: 15+

    Mechanicals/Mishaps: None

Report: The riders stayed together for the ride until the near the end. The low-traffic roads and pleasant scenery makes this a great route for all classes. Come ride and watch the leaves turn to gold during the next few week. After the ride, Holly, Jim, Jane, Matt and Sheryl met at B&J's for sandwiches.

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/16958870 heading down to Nanjemoy via Chx/Riverside and back by Bowie Rd/Mason Springs/Livingston, ˜1300' elev

Weather: Very pleasant, upper 60s to lower 70s, light winds, mostly sunny

    AMS: in the 16s

Report: We enjoyed near-perfect conditions today, as we took familiar roads but in the (very slightly) less-traveled direction, incorporating the new(ish)ly repaved Riverside and Livingston, which are still a pleasure to ride on. At the midpoint stop in Nanjemoy we watched a very tall tree on Liverpool Point Rd be sawn down piece by piece by the tree men. Thanks to all who could come out for a great morning of riding!
