Route: This familiar route departs from the Accokeek Fire Station and winds through Accokeek and down Marshall Hall Road to the Potomac River. After a rest stop, we retrace the route to Barry's Hill and take Accokeek Road back to the fire station.

Weather: Lovely, mid-70 degree weather with light clouds and a gentle breeze. 

AMS: 16 at the front to 14 for the sweep

Mechanicals/Mishaps: None - a perfect ride!

Report: The group started together and then spread out a bit down Marshall Hall Road. Congratulations to Sheryl for overcoming back trouble and returning to riding and to Lynne who did the ride in under an hour - a personal best! This is a great ride for all classes - you can ride as fast or as slow as you like and enjoy some great roads with almost no traffic. Take off early from work and join us next week.

Ron Altemus and Steve Palincsar and I were today's group, with Ron and me as leaders so Steve was nominally the only "attendee".  

As part of my strength training post-accident, we climbed the popular "western slope of mighty Mt. Pisgah" and all made it safely to the summit. Humid but with welcome clouds, it was an enjoyable ride.  Our group added a round trip to the river shore inside Smallwood State Park, finishing with 32.6 miles.

Mechanicals/Mishaps: Tom R had a flat tire before the rest stop, but fixed it and joined us at the store

Report: We had a nice turnout today; despite the clouds no rain was in the forecast. It was great to have Jan T and the Saizans back with us after several weeks' absence. Mike S volunteered to sweep, which helped make sure we were all accounted for as the group spread out: thanks! Our route, a variation of the CC route, added 4 or so miles before the stop at Pisgah Store, and as hoped, we all arrived there about the same time. At the store, as well as before and after the ride, there much conversation about the incident on this past Saturday's ride, when a car clipped Lou Dall'Orso's rear wheel resulting in a broken collarbone. He is a regular presence Tuesdays and Thursdays; our thoughts are with him until he returns to riding with us and we hope his recovery is quick and uneventful.

Weather:  Cloud and mid 70's at ride start.  Sunshine, blue skies mixed with white clouds, and mid 80's at ride end.

AMS:  15.0 plus or minus.  As advertised.

Distance:  46.4 miles.

Mechanicals/Mishaps:  One "Bee in a Bonnet".  But no bee stings!  On Rt. 6 before Dubois Road rider stopped to remove small piece of wire from tire but tire never went flat.

Report:  Was concerned that attendance  would be low today due to Redskins/Cowboys game.  But 5 members did attend the ride in addition to ride leader.  As advertised we travelled the Highways and Byways of Charles and St. Mary's Counties.  See GPS link for exact route.  One stop at Wicomico Shores and a 2nd stop at Chaptico Market.  The view never gets old at Wicomico Shores and by now everyone knows how popular the stop is at Chaptico Market.  And after Chaptico Market rest stop we resisted the "pull" of 3NT/Pole Land and did the entire route as per cue sheet.  Ok....Time Out!  One rider was sucked into 3NT/Pole Land at Old Village Road and Lockes Crossing Road and took the trail to New Market Road and then finished ride as per cue sheet.  Again thanks to all members who attended the ride.  To me another ride into the "Win" column.  Take care.  Later.

Ride Report:

I wasn’t expecting a big turnout for this ride; in fact, I was sort of expecting to ride alone.  It was a nice surprise to see 4 other riders when I got to the start.

We all stayed together on the ride down to the rest stop.  In fact, I barely pulled at all on the trip down since everyone wanted to be up front doing the work.  This was fine with me and I reserved my strength for the return trip.

We took a break at the store on Cobb Island and decided to skip the island tour.  The return trip was a bit harder since it seems like the wind was more against us on the return.  We were all together until the hill leading up to route 301.  At that point Richard and Douglas fell behind Brad and Matthew.  I waited for the rear group and kept them in sight until as we worked our way up the highway.  At the turn off for South Faulkner Road Richard and Douglas opted to continue on 301 while I turned right on Faulkner to continue the planned route.  I saw Douglas going up 301 on one of the cross roads from Faulkner but I never saw them again once I rejoined 301.

Fairground Road was a busier than normal since the county fair was in progress but it wasn’t too bad.  Brad and Matthew were waiting for me at the start point and Douglas and Richard continued home from 301.  Brad, Matthew, and I chatted a bit and then we went our separate ways.

Kudos to Douglas and Richard who rode from home for an extra 40 miles for the round trip; also kudos to Brad who rode 140 miles the day before and still rode incredibly strong on today’s ride.

We enjoyed getting to know Richard and we hope to see him soon on another ride.

Redskins vs Dallas.  Needed to have a relatively short ride so we would be back home before the game started at 1:00.  Ron and Barbara Haney, Tom Roberts, Ken Meredith, and I were able to get back in plenty of time.  For the most part we stayed together although some of the hills caused the group to separate.  What hills?  Marshall Hall, Bumpy Oak, Rte 6, Poorhouse, the rollers of Chickamuxen, and Livingston Rd.  We avoided Barry's Hill by taking the shoulder of Indian head Hwy for 1/10th of a mile until we could get back in the neighborhood to Livingston Rd and back to the start.  Ride leader  finished with 16.2 ams.  The only mishap was Ron's flat tire before leaving the parking lot, which was quickly changed.  The Redskins lost.

We were able to get our ride started around 9:30am, and were treated to extremely warm weather. Our group picked up the trail and followed the trail system counterclockwise. We decided to by-pass the inner loop and finished up the ride back at the trail head. Riders included Jason, and Barry.

Today was not a good day.  Four miles into our ride, Luis Dall'Orso (better known to most of us as "Lou") was struck from behind by an automobile.  An ambulance was called to take Lou to a hospital. Ron Haney rode back to ride start to get his van in which to safely store Lou's bike. Ron Haney, Barbara Haney, and Holly went to the hospital to be with Lou. The preliminary report is that Lou has a broken collarbone which will be repaired surgically on Monday and possibly some broken ribs. The hospital released him to his home with pain medication.

The ten remaining riders took a consensus vote and voted to continue the ride.  We completed the ride in a somber and reflective mood with none of the liveliness that would have been present had Lou been with us.

We wish Lou a speedy recovery.

Another busy day on the trail.  There was an event going on when I pulled up and it looked as if everyone was having a good time.  There was even a DJ playing old school music- it was nice. 

The four of us set out for our ride.  We maintained a nice pace as we headed to the Indian Head side.  On the return, we stopped at Hawthorne to discuss the ride Rod had taken for the club’s century, so we rode it – bringing our total mileage to 42.  We continued to ride at and maintain the pace we had already been riding - it was an extremely pleasant and enjoyable ride.  We were all happy to have added to the original ride, it allowed for a good workout.

When we returned to White Plains, we saw Reggie Stokes and talked with him for a little while.  On the trail, we encountered a turtle; 3 deer; squirrels; dogs and their people; and just people.  It was a good day.

Thanks guys for coming out.  We did a good job.

Small turn out to ride this morning. There were many trail users including bikers, walkers, joggers, and many dogs taking their humans for a walk. We didn't see a lot wildlife out and about today (a few deer, wild turkeys, and a bull frog). Member Bob Moye was riding the trail today. It was a wonderful day to be on a bike ride. I rode my "trike" for a change. Sue, Robin and Ron rode ahead at a faster pace. After our rest stop at White Plains Trail Head, Sue joined Jackie, Harold, and I for a leisurely ride back to the start. It was great to visit with Sue again. Since Jackie and I are getting over some serious sickness, we went straight home and took an afternoon nap.
