Ride Leaders: Jackie and Randy Schoch

Members: Ron Altemus, Robin Garnett, and Sue Henn.

Guests: Harold Johnson (past member of OHBC)

    Weather: Very Nice 70's!

    Route: IHRT

    Mishaps & Mechanicals: None

    AMS: 12mph (for the leaders)

Small turn out to ride this morning. There were many trail users including bikers, walkers, joggers, and many dogs taking their humans for a walk. We didn't see a lot wildlife out and about today (a few deer, wild turkeys, and a bull frog). Member Bob Moye was riding the trail today. It was a wonderful day to be on a bike ride. I rode my "trike" for a change. Sue, Robin and Ron rode ahead at a faster pace. After our rest stop at White Plains Trail Head, Sue joined Jackie, Harold, and I for a leisurely ride back to the start. It was great to visit with Sue again. Since Jackie and I are getting over some serious sickness, we went straight home and took an afternoon nap.

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/16531008, a variation of Steve P's Short and Flat, just a bit longer and less flat, Cedarville/ Baden/Aquasco, Moreland Mkt, returning to Brandywine on the western side with a deviation through the Pinefield neighborhood.

Weather: pleasant early fall-like temps in the 70s, overcast, a bit of a wind

AMS: 18.6 front, in the 15.5-16 or so range for sweep

Report: Ten A/B riders took advantage of the short/flatness of the route to ride at a brisk pace today. We welcomed Joan back to the Thursday group rides, then set off with a nice tailwind; after the additional few miles and the Woodville hill on the first segment of our route, we arrived at Moreland Market around the same time as the CCs. After chatting awhile, we quickly took care of the little climbing that was left to do and then enjoyed the flat final miles. Despite the wind, it was a great day to ride; thanks to all who came out!

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/16561793  29 miles, 637' of elevation gain

Weather: cloudy, 70s.  Yes, not a typo: seventies.

    Mishaps & mechanicals: none

    AMS: 12.7

Welcome back, Joan!  It was her first club ride in 5 weeks, since her mishap in Polska on the 3NT.  And quite a surprise for me, it was the first time I've seen Sue Henn in must be around 30 years.  I first met Sue in the early 1980s, on Potomac Pedalers club rides; she was the first person I ever heard speak of the Oxon Hill bike club.  It was also the first time in forever that we've seen Calvin on a Brandywine ride, the first time I can recall seeing Belinda at Brandywine, and the first time this summer seeing Tom Roberson here as well.  I'm glad you all came!

The A/B group did a longer version of the route, extending it by taking Aquasco Rd out to Dr Bowen, while we turned on Horsehead.  We saw them when we were about a tenth of a mile from the turn onto Woodville at Iowa, and were together with them at the Moreland Market.  Tom continued on St Peters Church as the rest of us went left on Sprague for a leisurely ride through Pinefield.

We briefly stopped at Cedarville Deli (I put the stop on the cue sheet in case Joan needed a break, but she was feeling fine) and when we got to North Keys Park, the whole group except me did a bonus lap around the running track at the park, adding half a mile to their total.  (I'd done it before anyone arrived at the park.)

Route: AF 16 Tour de Accokeek

Weather: Low 80s and low humidity

    AMS: 13.6

    Mechanicals/Mishaps: none

Report: We had another pleasant ride to the rest stop at Marshall Hall. We enjoyed sitting on the pier, watching a couple of boats go by and talking with a kayak commuter who had just come across the river from Fort Belvoir. He keeps a bicycle at the Fort Belvoir marina he rides to his job at the army base after his morning kayak commute.

Members:  Walt Roscello, Steve Palincsar, Sam Perry

Route:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14103818  40 mi.  A brief recap:  Down Livingston, up Mason Springs, west on MD-6 and a bit of a noodle on Bowie/Baptist Church back to MD-6 for a rest stop at Nanjemoy Community Center.  Then Beaverdam/Liverpool Point to the still fabulous newly paved Riverside and Chicamuxen to a 2nd rest stop at Smallwood Park.  Final return via Chicamuxen/Hawthorne/Chapmans Landing.

Extra miles for Walt as he rode from/back to his home in LaPlata while Steve accrued additional by starting/ending at Accokeek Firehouse.

Weather:  Seasonal:  sunshine, temp range of 78-85, humidity still okay, and wind out of the south.

    AMS:   mid 13s

Report:  Another very pleasant ride.  Walt, looking to regain strength, rode with the Bs to the first rest stop and then basically stayed with the CC group for the rest of the ride.  Steve, Sam, and I rode the entire route together with plenty of opportunities for conversation (as is common on a CC "conversational cruising" ride.  The aforementioned wind out of the south gave us a nice tailwind for the return ride starting once we turned onto Riverside.

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14103818, posted first by Ron A. for his CC group, taking in the southwest portion of the peninsula, 1320' elevation according to RWGPS

Weather: Great, 70s at start to 80s at end, slight SW tailwind to help us get home

    AMS: 17.2 for leader

Mechanicals/Mishaps: Jim's derailleur cable broke sometime after the first rest stop, and he had to finish the ride in his smallest cog

Report: We had a great group this morning for this very pleasant route, mostly regulars, with the welcome addition of Bruce, enjoying a morning off of work, and Travis, returning to his cycling roots after spending the last year getting super-fast. After the stop at Nanjemoy Community Center Jim and Larry split off, going down to Hancock Run Rd to check out reports from the IH100 of a bad gravel patch, and to document it in order to bring it to the attention of the county. The rest of the group finished the route without incident, stopping again to admire the views at Smallwood State Park. Jim and Larry did a few extra miles and had to deal with the broken cable and the resulting lack of suitable gears, but we all ended up safely back, having enjoyed another nice ride in good company.

We held our Sunday morning bike ride at Cedarville state park. We were able to get started a 9:00am and followed the course clockwise, at the coal furnace we switched up and followed the course in a figure 8 pattern. At the lake, we picked up the trail and followed the lake course clockwise. After the lake we went back to the main trail, and picked up the white trail. Riders included Dave Joni, Benny, Joni, Justin and Barry.

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/16467982  Rt 6 and the 3NT to Laurel Grove Park, then Laurel Grove, Kavanaugh, Loveville and Pin Cushion over to Budd's Creek, Colton Point and Oakley and a second rest stop at Murphy's.  A loop around Abell and Hatchet Thickett, then over to Bushwood Wharf, Bushwood and Hurry to an ice cream stop at Chaptico.  The return was meant to be Baptist Church to Old Village, Locke's Crossing and Thompson Corner to the 3NT and done, but the lure of easy riding (it has a very strong appeal) overrode the fear and horror of Polska and we took the 3NT from Baptist Church to Northern Senior Center, reducing the final mileage to 50.

Weather: 80s, less humidity than yesterday, and windy.  The wind was great on the way down to Avenue - we flew - but once we left Murphy's it was a hard slog into the wind.

Mishaps & mechanicals: none.  The man-traps of Polska claimed no victims today.

    AMS: 13.9

A big change in the weather today compared to yesterday.  Moderate temperature and breezy.  Tom Short, Barb and Ron Haney, Lou Dallorso, Kenneth Mundy, Calvin Holmes, Liam Healy, Andrea Noseck (recovering from being hit by a car), Ron Leak and Ken Meredith who rode to the start from Ken's house, joined me on this ride.  The group stayed together for the first few miles before splitting up into the faster and B's.  Ken wasn't feeling too well and decided to shorten his ride by cutting the ride to rejoin us before the rest stop.  Following the rest stop we continued on, again splitting into 2 groups.  In addition to the usual pot holed roads of Cedarville, McKendree, Cherry Tree Crossing, we can add Cross Road Trail.  That was the worse and should probably be avoided on future routes until it's repaved.  Everyone made it back to the parking lot uneventfully, with Ken and Ron heading back to their start location before the rest stop.  The only mishap was Ron's flat tire before reaching the ride start.  Stats - 46 miles, 15.2 ams,1477 feet of climbing, parts of the ride with pretty strong headwinds.

Ride Name:  Labor Day Weekend Ride...A week later.

    Leader:  Bob Howell

Members:  Tom Short, Lisha Peacock, and Jean Wright.

    Guests:  None.

    Route:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/16239887

Weather:  Getting warm/warm at ride start.  Hot and humid at end.  Weather Channel app had temperature at ride end 90 degrees and feels like 97 degrees.

AMS:  15.7/15.8.  Depending on whose computer said what.  We stayed together for ride duration.

Distance:  Ride posted at 58.3 miles.  We rode 56.4 miles by my computer.  See ride report.

Mechanicals/Mishaps:  Lost blinky light on 3NT before Oaks Road.  Found in a couple of minutes.

Report:  Was concerned due to projected heat that only Tom and I were going to be the only riders today.  Tom told me on Thursday he would attend the ride and I knew that would be fact.  Received email from Lisha early this morning she would also be attending.  3's Company (TV Show?).  And well before ride started Jean Wright also pulled into parking lot.  First time that ride leader has done a club ride with Jean and hoping there are many more to come.  Thanks.  After going over route and discussing possible short cuts due to heat we departed from Oak Ridge Park.  Without going into the different highways and byways of Southern Maryland  (see GPS route number) our ride included 3 waterfront views.  They are as follows...Wicomico Shores, Chaptico Wharf, and Bushwood Wharf.  Upon leaving Bushwood Wharf ride leader was starting to feel the heat a little.  When we arrived at Chaptico Market it seemed to everyone to a good idea to skip the ice cream and just gas and go.  Yes...No ice cream!  Ride leader suggested due to feeling the heat to a certain degree if we could take the short cut of 3NT ("Pole Land") to Oaks Road.  All riders agreed.  Thank you very much!  Even with the heat it was a good ride, from feedback a good route, and above all a great group to ride with.  Thanks to all for attending.  Take care.  Later.
