    Riders: See Sam's primary report

As Sam mentioned, we were very pleased to be joined by so many riders on such short notice.  When Sam suggested the ride 2 days ago, I was happy to serve as "wingman".  A few of us decided to cut the  miles to 18 just to get in few bases miles in and get reacquainted with our bikes at a casual pace.  It was great to see a lot of other people out riding the trail and enjoying the weather.

    Leader:  Darin King
Riders:  Blake Altman, Michael Blaine, Brad Francisco, Roland Heining, Steve Koegle
    Route: Gilbert Run-Mill Run 54  54 miles @ 19.5 AMS
Weather:  Low 50's rising to 60 with west winds @ 10-15 mph
    Mishaps:  None

As we gathered at the start, the skies were looking gloomy, and we actually had about a minute's worth of sprinkles (where'd that come from?).  Being that the course was mainly a north-south configuration, the westerly March wind was tolerable, helping and hindering in fair proportions.  The sun made an appearance by 10:30, and temperatures moderated nicely.  We had a nicely-matched set of riders, working together to push the pace a little higher than anticipated.  I threw in a 3-mile spin through "Clifton on the Potomac" for a change of scenery (and some extra hill work).  One rest stop at Ole McDonnell's Country Store on Rock Point Rd (note to future leaders:  they didn't let us use the restroom this time...new policy?)

We were missing some of your regular "A" riders, but those who came, conquered!  Thanks for coming.

    Ride Leader:  John Gorman
Ride Name:  IHRT(White Plains) to Smallwood Park & Pisgah
    Ride Distance:  37 miles - elv 1041ft -AMS 14.8
    Ride Class:  B(low-14 posted)
    Route: ridewithgps.com/routes/3943216
Mechanical Issues: 1- blown tire/ repaired
Weather: 55 cloudy to start/return was 64 and beautiful sunny conditions
    Guest Riders: Chris Tevis
Riders: Bob Howell, Jeannie Ann and Gary Swartz-enjoying their date day w/out their kids(how sweet), Karl Craton,
Danzie Seaward, Lou Dallorso, and as we headed out the lot picked up Pam and Drayton Reese.

As we started up the trail, Pam decided to turn back. Within a few miles the forward pack was pushing the express cranks, w/(1) Lou, Danzie, and Drayton surging forward followed by Karl, Gary, Bob, and Chris, w/ Jennie & John still keeping at the suggested 15-17 cruising max low B pace. Upon the first scheduled rest break -mile 14 at the entrance to Smallwood Park, the 2nd forward group came back, so that we could continue the ride together. We stayed together w/ an additional break after climbing Mason Springs @ the Pisgah store mile 23. As we were half way back on Marshall Corner Rd, Karl experienced a very loud complete blow out of his rear tire, we all pulled over and the flat was fixed, deciding to add a $5 bill between the now ripped tire itself and the tube, which was a wise decision as no additional tire issues were encountered.

As we turned off  Bensville road onto the final 4 miles of the IHRT we by passed many riders from the 11am ride of Sam and Calvin’s returning back from White Plains.

Great day of riding, before heading into a  cold/messy Sunday/Monday of possible wintry mess again, ARGH!

    Name: Casey Jones Express

    Class: A / AA
Riders:  Blake Altman, Brad Francisco, Michael Blaine
    Gain: 974’
    Distance: 25.8mi

Motto: “For the love of the people and the ride” - Michael Blaine, 2013
Weather: Threatening skies and 64 degrees with wind advisories (calling for gusts from 45 to 55mph), during the ride winds were only at 10-12 mph from the SSW.
    AMS: 19.9mph
    Mishaps: None
Mechanicals: Chain caught between the small cog and dropout

Ride Report: We got our “window of opportunity” and made the Ride.

All day long the reports were calling for rain and strong winds, but the timing seemed in question.    With temps predicted to be in the 60’s through 7:00pm, I remained cautiously optimistic that the wind and rain might hold off just long enough.  As I started my after-work bike commute back to Fort Washington, the winds were steady from the South at about 15, with light rain.  I thought; “it’s not looking good for the Casey Ride.”  I departed Fort Washington in my car and arrived at the Casey Jones parking lot at 4:35pm;  “nobody’s here yet.”  It wasn’t raining any longer in La Plata, the roads were slightly wet, and the winds were moderate at maybe 10 from the South.  I checked the radar return on my cell.  The next band of rain looked to be a couple of hours away; “hmmm, this might be possible.”  I pulled out my commuter-bike from the back of the car (an '81 Schwinn Voyageur 11.8, cold-set frame to accept today's 130mm ten-speed wheels, SKS Raceblade fenders, and Cygolites front and rear) and quickly fixed a flat caused by a thumbtack I picked up at the end of my commute.   I got out the signup form for the Casey Ride and waited to see if anyone would show; “4:50 and still no one here, guess I’ll draft a cancellation email, pack everything up and send the email at 5:00.”

But, at 4:55 Blake rides into the parking lot on his vintage rain-cruiser; “oh yeah!”   We quickly decide to do the ride. So I delete the cancellation email, pullout the signup form for Blake and make ready my bike once more.  At 5:00, just as we’re preparing to depart, Brad pulls up in his van and says out the window; “sorry I’m late.”  Very quickly he’s out of his van, Felt in tow and ready to ride.  He signs the form.  I stuff it in my jersey and discuss the conditions over the bridges on Rt-6 and Budd’s Creek.  And then we’re off.  Seconds into the course, as we turn down Carroll towards St Mary’s Ave, up rides Michael on his rain-ready Trek; “we gonna do this?”  Everyone (now four) eagerly confirms; "the ride is on!"

My place in the rotation is behind Brad.  He's the only rider without fenders.  The occasional splashes of mud and grit from Brad’s tires make me smile as I remember past discussions of fenders and who actually benefits (the owner or other riders).  As we make our way South on St Mary’s and into the Ride, like most Casey Rides, the intensity sharpens, the speed builds, and before long the paceline is focused and performing with precision as a single unit.   At that moment -- while I'm feeling the rush from the old steel-framed velo as it glides almost effortlessly within the paceline at 21,22,23 mph -- I’m instantly reminded why I love this Ride.  There are few things finer, more pleasing to the senses, than riding in a well-tuned, evenly-matched paceline slicing through the wind!  For me right then, the ride is made and the season is set.

We remain tight throughout the course.  I keep my pulls short to stay with the lighter bikes and avoid burnout.  Not Blake; he's on a bike probably heavier than mine and pulling like a maniac.   Brad and Michael stay easy up the hills so the heavier bikes can hold their wheels.  On the return North up Fairground Rd, my chain gets lodged between the small cog and the dropout.  At the time I'm pulling and announce that my chain is caught.  So, Michael literally pushes me at 12mph to the top of the next small hill.  There, we stop. I dislodge the chain, give the high-setscrew on the derailleur a quarter-twist, wipe the chain-oil from my hands on some wet brush, and we're off -- the entire evolution taking less than a minute.

When we arrive back at the parking lot, everyone is grateful for the temporary reprieve in the weather; warm with no rain and mostly cooperating winds throughout the course.  Ten minutes after we get back the rain starts, and within two hours the winds are gusting to 45.  But we got our window, had a terrific Ride and opened the 2014 Casey Jones Express season...  Looking forward to many fun Wednesday evenings!

Ride Report: With promises of spring-like weather, 17 cyclists were eager to ride the roads and bike trails of Charles County. The route was designed to preview some of the roads to be used on the MS Ride on June 7. Randy and Jackie did their own ride. Tom did a short ride because of a commitment. The other riders quickly separated into two groups with the faster group waiting at Pisgah to regroup and then heading for Bensville. Toward the end of the ride, the slower group split as some riders had appointments and winter legs and headed back to the start. Walt, Jim and Jane completed the route with a climb up Farmington and then an easy finish back to Bryans Road. Sam was waiting to welcome us back and Jan and Ron joined us after having lunch at Subway.

Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4191135 -- or, at least, that was what we planned.  However, after over 10 miles of steady drizzle and light rain we decided to shorten the route by 8 miles, ending up with 27 instead of the planned 35.
Weather: 42-45, overcast turning to drizzle and then light rain.  As we finished the ride, the skies cleared and temperatures started rising, but by then it was too late for us.  Still, it was good to get out and ride.  As reported, Old Sycamore is definitely closed.

It was windy, but wonderful.  So many people showed up:  Excuse me if I spelled any names wrong....Jan and Ron Tucker, Joan Oppel, Loretta Troen, Patricia Sanders, Karen and Taylor Morgan, Janell Saunders, Lisa Orcen, Steve Palinscar (Ride Leader of the Year), Ken Meredith, John Early, Margie Chattab, Linda Bankerd, Jim and Jane Hudnall, Lopu Dallgen, and Carol G.  We worked hard to get up  Mason Springs Road, and then we opted for Bumpy Oak because the shoulder is wider for a large group.  On this day, the first of daylight savings time and the opening of the Washington Post Peeps contest, we pondered.  Should we enter a Tour De Peep display next year?  We are looking for suggestions, and any input for how to obtain/make a peepcycle...  Please chime in.

    Ride Report:

Well it’s March and we all know what March is famous for – wind.  The web says the wind was 20 to 24 MPH out of the northwest for the period of ride.  So we had a quick ride from the north to the south towards Goose Bay with the wind mostly behind us.  Of course, when we turned north to return, we got to enjoy an excellent work-out into the wind.  Matthew’s GPS tells the tale of the ride; we had a 20+ MPH average out and just over 16 MPH on the return.  Other than the wind, it was a good ride with everyone staying together and working together throughout.

    Weather: Beautiful! Mid-sixties

What a beautiful day! Great to finally be able to get out on our bikes. Larry got there early and did five miles before others arrived. Lou and Chris rode from their homes. Michael had not been on his bike since November, and others had not ridden for several weeks. Diana was getting over illness and only rode to Marshall Hall, letting Dan finish and go back for her in the car. Everyone else did fine on the way back. Once up Barry Hill was not enough for Chris, who went back down and climbed it a second time.

Average speed: 14.3 mph at the back
Weather: Beautiful!! Sunshine with temps rising from 50 at start to 60 at the end
Mishaps and mechanicals: 1 flat tire

Spring is making a comeback!! Eight cyclists met at Southern High School for this shorter, later-starting B ride, and we were greeted with sunny blue skies, temps above 50 and good road conditions. Walter planned to ride a CC pace, so he rode on his own behind the group.

We traveled in a clockwise loop, going west on Harwood Rd, then north on Patuxent River and Queen Anne Bridge up to Central Ave, where we headed east for a few miles. Then we went south on Brick Church, S. River Clubhouse and Muddy Creek Rds to our rest stop in Galesville, where we found Janell's group taking their break at High's. While at the gas station we had our only mechanical, as Linda discovered she had a pinch flat. After fixing the flat, we took off down Owensville Rd for short trip to Deale. We went south on Owensville Sudley/Sudley Rd, then made the left to remain on Sudley, turned briefly onto Muddy Creek and then turned onto Swamp Circle Rd. We took Bay Front to Rockhold Creek to Deale Rd, then turned north up Nutwell Sudley and headed back to the school. While on Sudley we passed Walter as he pedaled towards Deale.

On a side note, I was happy to see some (new?) Cyclists May Use Full Lane signs on Harwood and Sudley Rds, and noticed others on Sands Rd as I was driving home. They should be very helpful in such a popular cycling area.

Many thanks to everyone who joined me for a fun ride today.
