With Beltway jammed for near nine miles this morning...we got a late start.  Since there were just the three of us, we decided to change the route from Peet's Coffee in Vienna to Peet's Coffee on Old Beulah Road...essentially the same route we did on Saturday.  Great riding weather.  And great conversation.  Cheers.

We started the ride at 0900, and picked up the clockwise. At the coal furnace we changed direction and followed the course to the lake. At the lake we followed the course clock wise. After the lake trail we picked up the main trail and finished up the ride. Everyone had a blast.

Ride Report:

Brad is fighting a pinched nerve in his back that is causing numbness and weakness in one of his legs.  I could tell because, at first, I could keep up with him.  After a while he seemed to warm up and we were back to normal where I struggle to keep up.

I suffered a rear flat within the first 10 miles or so.  I was able to change it without too much delay but I’m not very fast when it comes to changing tubes.

Michael split-off to head for home when we turned onto Riverside Road.  We picked up David just before Maryland Point Road and he stayed with us until we got to Route 6.  It felt like Brad, John, and I were the main cast of a television show and Michael and David were the guest stars.

We had a very quick rest stop since the biting flies found me right away – I may need to find a better rest stop for this ride.

Everyone stayed together throughout the ride and I think everyone enjoyed it.

Route: Short and Shady route following the Potomac South through Mt. Vernon and touching on historic places around Ft. Hunt and Fairfax County.

Report: 

Easy pace on suburban ride...some streets familiar to us and some that were new.  Rest stop at Peet's on Old Beulah Road and return through Old Town.  Our group stayed together and chatted...still set a good pace for a twisty, turny ride.

Today was another great day for a ride.  I was very happy to have Celeste ride with us, it has been some time.  As Rod and I did our thing, Calvin and Celeste did theirs.

The trail seemed to be quite today - not many people.  However, there were plenty of rabbit, deer, and squirrels. We actually saw a yellow bird, usually we see red or blue - they were out too.

The Conyers' went a little past Bumpy Oaks and turned back.  Rod and I rode the entire trail - of course.  Calvin and Celeste waited for us to return - thanks guys.

Thanks for coming out for another enjoyable ride.

Weather: It's officially summer, and it felt like it. In the 80s, high humidity; it felt like 90s by the end

Report: We had a big group for the first Best of Brandywine of Official Summer. This route, created by Steve P, was perfect for today: we enjoyed shady back roads, hardly any traffic, not too much climbing, and two nice rest stops, at Merkle, where we sat under the trees, and at McD's, where we really appreciated the AC and the ice machine, and where we always manage to find someone interested in asking us about riding. Some riders opted to shorten the route for various reasons, but most of us stuck to the plan; all in all it was an pleasant and uneventful ride, a nice sendoff to those leaving for Bike Virginia, where we wish them good weather and many enjoyable miles. Thanks to all for riding today!

Weather: Summer is here.  77 and sunny at the start, 91 and overcast, almost looking like rain in the offing when we finished.  Humidity to suit.  Good thing it really wasn't hot today.  "Just you wait, Henry Higgins, just you wait..."

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/22228042  40.4 mi, 1800' of elevation gain.  No notable hills, but we got to go up Van Brady and St Thomas Church, and we also got to go down St Thomas Church. We went down Mattaponi twice.  Most notable was our route through Marlton from Wallace Lane to the McDonalds: we've gone the opposite way, and not too long ago, but this is the first time ever the way we went today. 

Mishaps & mechanicals: none

The McDonalds in the shopping center just off 301 and Fairhaven hasn't been one of our regular stops.  I think today was only the third time we've been there.  But today it proved to be a really high value stop for a hot day.  Unlimited ice and cold water - priceless!  It was 90 when we got there, but that ice cold water made the rest of the ride seem cool and pleasant.  Lots of shade on this route, too; some familiar roads, but in general it didn't feel much like one of the "usuals" and that was the idea.  We got some discussion about cycling from the folks there in the parking lot too, including one who happily recounted his adventures on the C&O Canal Towpath, and another who agreed that regardless of the heat, bicycling was definitely better than working -- and so say all of us!

Weather: temps in the low 80s, no head winds, party cloudy skies made for a great first day of summer.

AMS: 14.9 in the back and 17.0 in the front.

Mechanicals/Mishaps: Right before the rest stop at the River. Michael broke part of his drive train. This resulted in him not be able to pedal and his bike could only coast.

Report: The first day of summer and we had a great day with great weather. I hoped to go to B&Js after our ride. But due to some mechanical problems I decided to go home after an extended ride.The group started out together and stayed together until Marshall Hall Road. Diane Coontz got her first road bike and enjoyed keeping up with the pack. The bike and her hard work is making her into a stronger rider and she is leaving the CC ranks and is becoming a B Rider and this is what the Tour is all about. Jim stopped several times to take our pics. He had some mechanical problems with his phone as it over heated in his bag and wouldn't take any pics at one of the stops. At the rest stop we learned of Michael's mechanical problems. Tyler volunteered to ride back and get his truck to pick up Michael and take him home. Only one problem as Tom Hill his brother had the keys to truck. They coordinated a key swap. Tyler is a strong rider and came to pick up Michael after an extended break at our rest stop. Several riders took their normal break and left to conquer Barry's Hill. On the way back I was flagged down by a Damsel in Distress standing along the road side. I thought she might need medical attention so I stopped to check on her. No. There was 2 "Free" dressers on the side of the road, in front of someones house and this lady needed help getting them in her car. This was a first for Diane and I. We loaded one of the dressers in her mini van. I told her there wasn't room for the other dresser. But she was determined to get them both in. And she moved things around and ordered Diane and I to move things around and then she moved the front, non driver side seat forward and ordered Diane and I to move the first dresser forward and there was just enough room to get the second dresser in her van. She said thanks and was on her way. and so were we because we were afraid that she might order us to ride to her home and help her unload. LOL. Next was Diane's attempt to conquer Barry's Hill. She has been on several rides and hasn't conquered Barry's Hill. But she was determined to make it to the top today. And today was her day. With hard work, grit and determination Diane rode to the top of Barry's Hill and was one Happy Rider -  And this is what the Tour de Accokeek is about - becoming better and stronger riders. Diane's goal is to become a strong B rider by the end of the summer and she is well on her way.

Ride Report:

I don’t have a lot to report for the ride except we had a big group and a fun ride without any problems that I’m aware of.  Chase 1 came in with an average of 20.6 but other than that and the lead average I don’t have any ride statistics.  I hope everyone enjoyed the ride; I know I did.
