Report: A fast start for the ten AA riders, with the wind at our backs all the way to the first rest stop at Goose Bay. We picked up Tom Roberts from the A group just before the climb up Mason Springs hill. That turned out to be a fast climb aided by the tail wind and besting many personal records. Other than a couple of brief stops to fix dropped chains, the first leg was smooth and we managed to keep an AA/2 pace.
The second leg saw us working harder after turning to face what felt like a relentless headwind. The group split into two while climbing Rose Hill, but regrouped at MD 225. The wind proved a challenge to ride through. Unfortunately, one rider touched wheels with another and hit the pavement on 225. The group stopped to give assistance and offered to take a shortcut back, but the rider wanted to finish the complete route. At Poorhouse, Blake turned off to ride home.
For the third and final leg, Michael skipped the second rest stop, Pisgah, and soloed back in time to go for a run in Indian Head. Having ridden to the start, Douglas peeled off on Chicamuxen, to ride home for 70 miles total. Tom, who had also ridden to and from home, got in 76 miles. Those are very impressive mileages, especially considering the wind and strong pace. The remaining seven riders continued back to the Indian Head. On arrival, Brad got out his first aid kit and we all helped clean up and bandage our injured companion.
Thanks to all the participants and to Sherwood Byers, Jim and Jane Hudnall, and everyone else who organized this great club event.
