Well, I was late having missed the exit, which meant I had to go all the way to Riva Rd to do the turn around, so got there right at 10.  But, my intent was a relaxing B ride, which is exactly what we did.  My average never got over 14.5.

After just a few miles we saw a couple folks waiting for us....Harris Hudson and John Agazzi decided to back off the "A" pace and join us.  We all rode together but then John decided to turn around at 10 miles to shorten the ride, still recuperating from his hip injury. A couple  other folks went off at a faster pace and we caught up to the them at the gas station rest stop in Galesville. Most of us skipped the ride down to the official rest stop, shortening the ride by 2 miles, no matter. We also saw Debbys group as they rode into the gas station.  We invited a few of them to join us, but they were happy not to, hmph!

I think we all enjoyed the more relaxed pace, the great weather, great roads and great company.

We held our Sunday morning Mountain Bike Ride at Cedarville. The group managed to get started around 10:15 and followed the trails counter clock wise. Benny & Joni meet up with the group near the lake trail. Riders included Barry, Randy, Matt, Joni, and Benny.

A lone warm day with a hint of sunshine was not to be missed.  Tamara Miller, on her first ride as an Oxon Hill member, Janell Saunders, Pano Gianniotis and myself rode the familiar route from the Starbucks with a different ending.  No Barry's Hill, a nice decent on Farmingham, only to go up Chatsworth.

    Ride Report:

What a great ride!  The weather was nice ahead of yet another winter storm.  We had a well matched group of riders who stayed together throughout.  Matthew had his new Zip wheels and he was really rolling along!  I don’t have too much else to say except it was fun.

Today I am home looking out my window at the snow on the ground and the pending mud melt in my back yard.  I am thinking of the wonderful day it was on Sunday when I was joined by Diane Harris, Steven Perakis, Pano Giannoitis, Jan and Ron Tucker, Liam Healy, Jim and Jane Hudnall, Sarah Clement, and ken Meridith.  Janell was not able to attend, as she was tending a cold.  But we all missed her.  The ride was perfect.  At the rest stop Sarah shared her source for a great rice cake recipe she got from The Feed Zone by Dr Lim and chef Biju.  Highly recommended for all cycling health nuts.

Weather: as 1 pm hit, a glorious sun filled day w/ temps of 60. AMEN to that after this terrible cold weather we've had. (well at least until mid-week when more nasty white-stuff may cover the roads again)

I tweeked (as usual) the standard route and after 7 miles, turned R onto the IHRT, to eliminate hill work, especially this early in the year and basically 30-days between outdoor rides (makes sense to save the legs and simply get in easy miles; you don’t run a marathon the first day out, Momma always told me). Today I took this up to Village Green, the shoulder of MD-210 N., zig-zagging onto Chapman Landing/Lane back over to MD-210 shoulder/R-side streets to the  Livingston Rd TL. To avoid the potholes and Barry’s Hill, I continued on the R-side of MD-210 using several community streets crossing over @ Pine Dr, (wonderfully smooth paved conditions) a short time on Livingston to  a R -Pine Ln and the service rd and side sts to the Livingston Rd TL back over to the Shopping Center. Doing so sure saves you  from the  terrible road conditions and standing water that exists all the way back on Livingston. This return route certainly takes away the hill work, and makes a much more enjoyable return and makes you want to ride another day (if hills just aren't your thing) vs some of the standard cuesheet return routes back to Accokeek. Starting from Manokeek Center does provide services of Wendy’s/Starbuck’s etc, vs Accokeek FD.

The IHRT was clear of snow, but several areas had some large broken trees protruding into the trail, but very passable.

A small group came out for a short tour around St. Mary's County.  The promise of cloudy skies at the start was kept, but the promise of lighter winds was broken.  The route started at Chopticon High School and found its way down to St. Clement's Island Museum.  Traffic was generally light as we enjoyed some fine county roads (Maddox, Colton Point, Hatchet Thicket, Oakley, Bayside, Maypole, etc.).  We regulated the pace to match the participants, finishing a good deal faster than we expected.  About half way through, the sun made a glorious appearance and warmed us for the rest of the ride/day.

    Thanks, all, for coming out.

Route: Brandywine 36 Hughesville 35.7 miles, 747 feet climbing

Riders met at the Brandywine Firehouse parking area with riders for the A and B 46 mile Hughesville Meander. This easier route took riders to Hughesville following the faster riders but cutting off a mile or two before the rest stop and a few miles on the way back. It also added a rest stop at the Moreland Country Store at mile ten and joined the other riders at the Sunoco Station in Hughesville for a second break. In spite of being off of the bikes for several weeks due to the unusual cold and snowy weather, the riders all rode well and no one had problems with the distance or the pace. The weather was the best we have had in weeks - close to 60 degrees and sunny by the end of the ride - a great day to be outside on our bikes.

Finally a nice weekend for cycling! We had such a wonderful time being out in the sunshine, we hardly noticed the wind. No mishaps (other than the CRAMP MONSTER catching the leader).  We stayed within the advertised pace. Thanks to everyone for coming out, "LETS RIDE"!

    Ride Report:

Well it was the first nice day for a ride in quite a while and everyone seemed to want to make the most of it.  The ride started out pretty fast on flat Brandywine road and then got faster.  One rider lost his water bottle and a few of us waited for him.  Once we regrouped we attempted to catch the front group; I believe this was a mistake.  As usual with this kind of thing, catching the front group seemed achievable but the rear group was actually sinking away slowly.  Eventually the front group was lost from sight and the rear group slowed to a more reasonable, but still fast, pace.

We regrouped at the rest stop.  Once we got underway again, it became obvious that some of us in the back had expended too much energy early in the ride.  Soon after the break the ride was splitting up again.  I stayed at the back with the last rider and then he opted to short-cut the ride back.  This left a ride leader without a ride.  I expected to catch a lone rider a saw ahead of me but I never did (I found out later he had taken two wrong turns which shortened his ride).  Near the end of the ride I caught three riders and we finished more less together.

As far as I know the ride status was as follows: 1 rider fell back with the B ride (he told me to go ahead so I did), 1 rider got lost but got back to the ride start for a shorter ride, 1 rider took a short cut intentionally, and all of the others finished the ride.  The problem with this ride was not that the front group went too fast but that I didn’t warn the folks in the back group to slow down early on during our fruitless chase.

I hope everyone still enjoyed the ride despite some fracturing in the group; I know I did.
