Ride Name: Manokeek Village to Goose Bay 50

    Leader: John Gorman
Members: Linda Bankerd, Tom Short, Jay Lewis

Weather:  8:15am start.  Partly sunny upper 60s lots more sun than the weather man forecast, fine, fine day.

    Stats:   49.7 Miles/14.6 AMS/Elv- 1100ft gain/riding time-3.25/elapsed time-3.50. (I’d say a quick day for 50miles)

Route:  Shopping center Berry Rd, some side sts to Middletwon/IHRT/Pomgfret/Hawthorne/Ripley-Annapolis Woods/Fire Tower/MD-6/Mill Swap/Goose Bay. Reverse back to Poorhouse/ Mason Springs/Livingston/IHRT/MD-210/ side sts along 210-N, back to the shopping center. A nice low elv route to get 50miles in.   Breaks at Ollies/Goose Bay/IHRT-portolet.   Mechanicals/Mishaps:  Perfect NONE!

Report:  We all wonder where everyone was, no other Sat rides posted, perhaps folks were out  state doing an event ride. Before we got started Tom advised he was going to skip the mile 16 Ollies break and head to mile 26 Goose Bay. Jay advised he has not done more than 30miles and limited riding and that after Ollies he may take a shorter way back. We stopped at Ollies for a quick bite/drink and headed off, expecting Jay to go to mile 18 and then divert, he kept straight before turning L-Ripley, Linda and I tried to yell at him but between “blue-toothing” and etc, he must’ve not heard us. So Linda & I rode to Goose Bay, Tom left there as we were pulling up to the Porch.  Linda & I rode together to finish the day’s ride. Jay’s car was gone from the lot and I Tom was leaving nearby Wendys. So all riders accounted for.

I circled the lot a few times to get an even 50.0 miles. Wonderful roads for today’s route, yep, no real climbs either.  Gotta love that.  My bike always thanks me for not making it to do lots of elevated climbing.

You know the saying “Happy Bike, Happy Life.”

A hot day for a ride but the breeze felt good, at least until one realized that it was full of pollen!

The route was flat, the pace was good, Pat Walthers, Barry Winkelman, Steve Palincsar made up the CC group today. Pat and I rode together after the rest stop, with Steve and Barry ahead. We picked up Steve at the Moreland store on the way back but Barry had gone ahead.

    Thanks everyone for coming out.

Mechanicals or Accidents: None to report

Sixteen Riders joined the ride leader for a forty mile flat road ride. Temperature rose to 90 degrees with Humidity. Riders kept together until we reached Poplar Hill Rd and then the separation began. With the addition of Poplar Hill Rd and Samuel Mudd Rd I'm sure our regular Strava numbers were challenged. The rest stop was at mile 20. Some riders took a brief respite at mile 30 ( Mooreland Store). I believe the humidity and tree pollen took a toll on us during the final half of the ride.

Ride Leader swept the rear at 16 AMS. Up front was 18 AMS or better.

    Leaders: Jean Wright

Riders: Mike Mallinoff, Chuck Coe, Rob Smith, Holden Hudson, Kishia Clemencia

    AMS: 17.2 mph

Weather:  It was a hot one...90 degrees, sunny...wind was not an issue

Mechanicals/Mishaps: Lost light, another lost item, flat tire

Report: Awesome showing for the A ride!  Lots of familiar faces of people who we had not seen in a long while.  Especially nice to have another female rider.  Greeting those who were making their first CJE appearance of the session, everyone did some quick hugs and handshakes before we started.  There was some first-time-out-this-season talk with promises of being lucky if they averaged 15 mph.  Well, those sandbaggers did not show up - everyone came in with a 17 mph average or better. Everyone was ready to ride in the first 90 degree CJE for the year.

After a few people recovered their lost items at the RR crossing on Bel Alton-Newtown Rd, we became spread out and regrouped at the top of the hill on Charles St.  We formed a strong pace line that carried us all the way to the east end of Allen's Fresh Rd where traffic separated us again.  Our pace line rotated regularly and afforded some rest from the heat. Along the way, Paul Bales drove by in his car and stopped a few time to take our pictures.  Can't wait to see them.

From Allen's Fresh, Kishia and Chuck paired up to the end while Rob, Holden, and Jean rode together. On 301, Holden got a flat from a nail. Holden quickly changed the tire and we were back on the way.  Rob rode with Holden who was having some cramps in his neck...truly a pain in the neck. Jean rode ahead so that she could make it to bike doctor before they closed.

In the end, everyone was sweaty and smiling!  Great ride! Glad to see everyone!

    Leader: Tim Murphy

Members: Charlie Sidwell, Jane Hudnall, Jim Hudnall, Michael Dong, Ron Leak, Troy Eddy.

Guests: Dan Zavorka and his daughter

    Route: Tour de Accokeek

Weather: First 90+ degree day of the year on the Tour de Accokeek

AMS: 19+ for the front group to the river, 16+ for the second group to the river.

    Mechanicals/Mishaps: None.

Report: I thought it would be a hot one. It was the first 90+ degree on the Tour. At least it wasn't Humid. Everyone was getting ready for the ride and we had the pleasure of Dan Zavorka drop by to say hello. He was out with his daughter running errands and was nice enough to drop by and say hello. His next stop was to take his daughter to BJ's for some ice cream. We did put Dan to work to take the group photo. We took one in the parking lot and then rode down to the entrance of the parking lot to take a photo by the Firetrucks. Must have been something going on inside as all the firetrucks were outside. This made a great photo op for us. We had some head winds and worked together to get to the river. We made it to the river with no problems. At the river there was a couple riding their Harley. They had a 12 pack of beer and stopped to enjoy the river view. But probably not the best thing to ride a motorcycle, while drinking and carrying a warm 12 pack on you lap as you ride. Oh well.  We conquered Barry's Hill on the way back to the Firehouse. See you next week.

    Ride Leader:  Calvin Conyers

Riders:  Susanne Kohl-Parker, Rod Barnes, Mia Haynes, Reggie Stokes, and Nate Humphries (guest).

Report:  Just a wonderful day to be on your bike.  Every thing felt prefect,  not too hot, great shade, not too much wind.  Seems like nature herself relished the day as there were reports of ducks, turkeys, turtles, and  rabbits out and about.  Mia even had a "stare down" with a snake that had decided the center of the trail was a good place to be.  Made for a great post ride story.

All riders rode well, but all were very impressed by the performance of our guest Nate Humphries, who had introduced himself as a "newbie".  He rode out to Indian Head with the forward group of Rod, Mia, and Reggie with no problem.  He then rode back for a while with Susanne and I, then pushed ahead to get some speed work in.  It was good to see him waiting for us in White Plains after the ride.  For a new rider, Nate shows tremendous potential to move to higher level riding fast.  And, he has a very pleasant personality.  I hope he becomes a member and join us on many rides.  Thanks all for coming out today.

Route:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/21038901, stopping first at Goose Bay Marina, then at Pisgah Store

Weather: Fantastic, possibly even perfect: sunny, un-humid temps in the 70s, but we did manage to find some mild headwinds.

    AMS: 18.3 for front group

Mechanicals/Mishaps: one flat on Chicamuxen by Lackey HS, one episode of leg cramps

Report: Maybe a spare sign in sheet should be on hand for these beautiful days; we ran out of space with 19 riders, some regular, some rarely-seen on Tuesdays, hopefully to be seen more often. The conditions seemed to be energizing, as reflected by the AMS's, which were a notch higher than usual for many of us. Maybe weeks of battling headwinds has made us stronger. We scaled Mt. Pisgah, after which we reconvened at Goose Bay to enjoy the porch furniture without even having to climb the steps to the porch, which was being painted. After a leisurely break, and a little climb up Rt 6/Welcome Rd, we met up for another leisurely break at Pisgah Store, then somewhat reluctantly left our comfortable seats on the steps to confront the last few rollers on Chicamuxen and Chapmans and on to the end. Jonathan and Michael D. rode mountain bikes today but that didn't slow them down. At the end of the ride Tom Short miraculously appeared; he had decided to start later and do a different route, but somehow finished at the exact same time as we did. What a wonderful day to be able to ride! Thanks and see you next time!

  • Tue, May 16, 2017 10:00 AM | Ron Altemus (Administrator)

    Leader: Ron Altemus

Members: Harry Kidd, Gloria Gladden, Joan Oppel

Route:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/21038901  40.6 mi/1218" elevation.  Outbound via Livingston, Hawthorne, Ripley, Poorhouse, Burch, and Blossom Point to everybody's favorite, Goose Bay, for a rest stop.  Return via Mill Swamp, Welcome, Fire Tower, Annapolis Woods, and Poorhouse to rest stop #2 at Pisgah store.  Bicknell, Sweetwater, Chicamuxen, and then a route mod to Marbury Run before returning to Chicamuxen, Hawthorne, and Chapman's Landing to finish the ride.

Weather:  Ditto Barb's assessment - simply perfect with unbelievably clear blue skies and most pleasant temperatures sans humidity.  Any headwinds that the A/Bs encountered must have been because they were riding so fast!

    AMS:  13

Mechanicals/Mishaps:  Joan had installed new cleats and the first light at MD-210 gave her pause as to whether they were working properly.  Several tests of unclipping at the firehouse eased her concerns and the new cleats did not prove troublesome for the rest of the ride.  After going through the intersection with Chicamuxen enroute to Mighty Mount Pisgah, Harry began feeling a thump from his rear tire.  Examination revealed that the tire had a deformed area so he opted to return to Bryan's Road, which he reached without trouble and then headed off to his LBS.

Report:  First off, apologies for not calling ahead to the Goose Bay Marina to let them know we were coming so the deck would be available for our rest stop.  Nothing beats a good deck on a perfect day for taking one's leisure.  Aside from that disappointment, this couldn't have been a better day or ride.  Gloria had not been down to Goose Bay, hence choosing that as our ride destination.  She thoroughly enjoyed the ride down and back, with high marks given by all to Mill Swamp Rd looking wonderful in the lusciousness of mid Spring.  We altered our route on the return, going down Marbury Run to quickly visit the spring right before Chicamuxen, another less visited gem.  Wish that everyday was this nice for riding!

    Ride leader: Steve Palincsar

Members: Jim Hudnall, joining en route

Weather: sunny, windy, 60s at the start and chilly due to the wind, rising to almost 80 by early afternoon, but still chilly due to the wind.

    Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/13453011

    Mishaps & mechanicals: none

    AMS: 11.5

I didn't expect anyone at Accokeek Firehouse, and unsurprisingly no one came.  Taylor Ave was as challenging as ever.  When I got down to the bottom of the hill leading to the lighthouse I found renovations under way at the rest room.  Leaving the Fort I noticed PHT marker signs along my route through Tantallon.  I'd just finished giving directions to a lost motorist trying to find Fort Washington who had ended up at Swan Creek when I found Jim riding towards me on Riverview Rd., having ridden from home to intercept me.  We stayed together to Miller Farms and down Thrift Hill to Floral Park.  At Floral Park and Livingston he turned north on Livingston to head home.  (I wonder if he took the Taylor Ave Bypass...)  The remainder of the ride was windy, but uneventful.

    Ride Distance: 47 Miles

Average Speed of the Ride:  19.5 MPH

    Ride Class:  AA/3 Sport

    Mechanical Issues: None

    Mishaps: None

Weather:  Upper 60’s at the start, mid 70’s by the end, increasingly breeze, sunny, a nice day!

    Guest Riders:  None

Member Riders:  Phil Mitchell, David Kemp

    Ride Report:

Phil rode to the start and arrived about 5-10 minutes before 9:00AM; we waited a bit for more to show but no one did so off we went.  We encountered David at about mile 8 on the narrow section of MD 224.  We all rode together down to the end of Route 6 for a quick break at the river.  You really can’t see the river anymore because someone has piled brush at the end of the road.

When we started our return we seemed to gain a tail wind.  David turned off the route at about mile 34.  Phil and I continued back to the start without incident and we had a drink and a snack at Pisgah store where we talked about... wait for it – bicycling.  It was another good ride; thanks for joining me gentlemen.
